If a harsh winter or hot summer leaves your lawn with bare spots, spruce up the stressed lawn with a beauty treatment. These instructions explain how scarifying and reseeding transform holey greenery into a velvety carpet of lawn.
How can you reseed properly after scarifying?
After scarifying, you should level out bare spots and unevenness with a mixture of soil and sand. When reseeding, it is best to use original lawn seeds or special seed mixtures. Distribute the seeds evenly, ensure soil closure and keep the lawn continuously moist.
Scarifying and leveling out unevenness - this is how it works
The lawn mower is used for the first stage in the beauty program. Mow the green area at the lowest setting. Then scarify the lawn lengthwise and crosswise to comb out all weeds and moss. Please set the scarifier to a depth of between 2 and 4 mm. Use the rake to completely sweep away the clippings.
The scarified lawn not only reveals all the bare spots, but also brings unevenness to light. Use a mix of sifted garden soil and sand in a ratio of 2:1 to level out the bumpy spots.
Instructions for skilful reseeding – How to do it right
It is an advantage if you have grass seeds from the original sowing in stock. Alternatively, specialist retailers offer special seed mixtures, such as 'Loretta Repair Lawn Seeds' or 'Neudorff gapless'. How to sow correctly:
- Adjust the spreader to the manufacturer's recommended distribution density
- Pour the lawn seeds into the spreader and mix thoroughly by hand
- Push a lawn roller over the seeds for good soil contact
You can either spread lawn seeds by hand. To better estimate the seed density, weigh a handful of seeds beforehand. Please distribute the seeds in two directions - first lengthwise, then crosswise. Once you have created the necessary ground connection, water the lawn thoroughly.
Aftercare
After scarifying and reseeding, keep the lawn continuously slightly moist to protect the seedlings from drought stress. In dry weather, water the re-seeded green area every day in the early morning or in the evening. The lawn receives its first cut when it has reached a height of 8 to 10 cm.
Tip
The time window is open between April and September to scarify a mossy lawn. However, the scarifier should be left in the shed if it has rained. Treating wet lawns with the sharp scarifying blades leaves behind a swampy desert that cannot be repaired by simply reseeding.
