The maternal banana plant thrives successfully in native areas under certain conditions. The ideal conditions include proper care, the perfect location and, above all, proper fertilization.
How to properly fertilize banana plants?
Fertilize banana plants regularly: every 1-2 weeks in spring/summer, monthly in autumn/winter. Use organic liquid fertilizer, e.g. blue grain in liquid form. Watch out for over-fertilization and add liquid potassium fertilizer every 3-4 weeks in the fall.
Golden Rules
- do not fertilize much, but regularly
- Spring/Summer: every 1 to 2 weeks
- Autumn/Winter: monthly
Clever hints
Liquid fertilizer is best. This can be used according to the package leaflet. In contrast to grains, the liquid form leads to visible results more quickly. The plant grows faster and more magnificently.
Experts only recommend organic fertilizer for the banana tree. Be careful not to over-fertilize. Banana plants of all varieties take this very seriously. They quickly drop their leaves and say goodbye.
Since, in contrast to palm trees, bananas need a lot of fertilizer, hobby gardeners and professionals often use blue grain (€14.00 on Amazon) in liquid form. The first fertilization in March can be a little more vigorous. When the banana tree moves into the garden in spring, it will benefit from an extra portion of compost.
Make your own blue grain liquid fertilizer inexpensively:
- Prepare 5 liters of water with 2 to 3 grams of blue grain
- leave to rest overnight (slow dissolution)
- stir very well before pouring
- clean the watering can thoroughly after use
Learning to understand the banana tree
As soon as the plant begins to grow significantly, regular fertilization is carried out every 1 to 2 weeks. The banana tree loves it when a few squirts of liquid fertilizer get on the leaves. Shiny leaves follow as a wonderful result of this care.
As soon as the season comes to an end in September or October, experts swear by an additional application of liquid potassium fertilizer. This is added to the regular fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks.
If the plants show symptoms of stress and deficiency, specialized fertilizer comes into play.

If hobby gardeners want to harvest banana fruits, they definitely need to be fertilized regularly.
