The flowering time of lavender depends primarily on the variety. There are early-blooming and late-blooming lavender varieties, of which the crested lavender is the earliest - the type also known as butterfly lavender opens its flowers in May.

When is the flowering time of lavender?

The lavender flowering period varies depending on the variety, but often begins in May/June for lavender and extends to July for other varieties. In Germany, lavender species usually bloom between mid-June and July, depending on climatic and soil-dependent factors.

The most beautiful travel destinations for lavender blossoms

Early summer is the right season for lavender blooms. The fields of Provence in southern France in particular are a single purple to blue sea from around May / June. Starting in the merry month of May, we start with the early-blooming lavender, which also blooms the longest of all the varieties. The flowering period of real lavender begins at the beginning of June and is mainly found in the mountain regions. A short time later, the tall growing lavender begins to open its flowers. The last to bloom is Lavandin, which is typical of Provence and blooms in a lush blue-violet tone from mid-June. By the way, although Provence is the best-known growing area for lavender, there are also extensive fields in other Mediterranean countries. Italy's Tuscany and Greece are always worth a trip to see the lavender blossoms. There are also other growing areas in Spain (e.g.a. on Mallorca), Croatia (especially on the island of Hvar) and in Hungary (Tihany peninsula).

Lavender blossom in Germany

In Germany, lavender blooms much later than in the Mediterranean - it is usually just not warm enough here in early summer. Most lavender varieties here only bloom from mid to late June, sometimes even as late as July. Furthermore, the local lavender blossoms not only depend on the weather (i.e. duration of sunshine, drought), but also on factors such as the nature of the soil and care. Lavender only blooms so luxuriantly and with an intoxicating scent when all the conditions are right - the plant is a very sensitive little one and therefore likes to be treated with the utmost care.

Tips & Tricks

Cut your lavender back heavily towards the end of July / beginning of August at the latest, then it will often bloom a second time.
