Colorful, blooming and delicate - that's what they are, the mallows. Planting them doesn't take much effort and they are undemanding to boot. But you should keep the following aspects in mind when planting.
How do you plant mallow correctly?
Mallows require a sunny location, moderately nutrient-rich, humus-rich, permeable and slightly calcareous soil. The planting distance should be at least 30 cm. Sow seeds directly outdoors between March and May, covering the seeds with 1 to 2 cm of soil.
Which location is suitable?
Mallows are considered to be adaptable when it comes to finding a suitable location. But they prefer to grow in a sunny spot. This is where they form most of the flowers. They also do well in partial shade.
Tall-growing mallows such as the hollyhock or the beautiful mallow, which can reach a size of up to 2 m, should be planted in a protected location. In addition, it is advisable to tie it to a pole (€79.00 on Amazon) to prevent it from twisting.
What properties should the soil have?
Mallows, normal garden soil is sufficient. They just can't get used to compacted and peaty soils. The substrate should ideally have the following characteristics:
- moderately nutrient-rich to nutrient-rich
- humos
- permeable
- slightly calcareous
- fresh to moist environment
What planting distance is necessary?
Basically you can use a minimum planting distance of 30 cm. Also remember that the upward distance is important when planting your mallow in a pot on the balcony. Some mallow species are extremely tall.
How are they sown?
Planting a purchased mallow is not worth it. You can save yourself these costs because mallows are generally capable of germinating well and sowing occurs without any problems. Many species such as the hollyhock or the bush mallow sprout new plants every year. Other species like to sow themselves

- Advancing is unnecessary
- Direct sowing between March and May
- Dark germinator: cover seeds 1 to 2 cm thick with soil
- Germination temperature: 15 to 20 °C
- Germination time: 2 to 3 weeks
When do mallows bloom?
Depending on the type of mallow and assuming species-appropriate care, mallows bloom at different times. While some species bloom in May, other species bloom from June or July. The flowering period can last September.
