The canna, also known as the flower cane, originally comes from the tropical Asian region. For this reason, it is not adapted to the local climatic conditions. Can you still overwinter them outside?
Is it possible to overwinter cannas outside?
Can you let a canna overwinter outside? No, cannas are extremely sensitive to frost and should not be left outside over the winter. Instead, the rhizomes should be dug up in the fall, cleaned, layered in sand or soil and stored in a frost-free, cool place.
The flower tube – extremely sensitive to frost
The flower tube is not made for winter temperatures in this country. It is sensitive to frost. For this reason it should not be wintered outside. The probability that the plant will die is extremely high.
Alternatively, the plant can be left in the winter garden over the winter or hibernated indoors. Please note:
- Cut the plant back to the ground in autumn
- Dig up and clean tubers
- layer in sand, soil or wood chips
- overwinter in a frost-free but cool place
Tips & Tricks
The Canna rhizomes don't need much space to overwinter. All you have to do is put them in a bucket of sand or earth and place them in the basement or garage.
