Most known lily species are considered hardy. But in cooler regions such as high altitudes and coastal areas, it is recommended to store the bulbs over the winter.
How can I overwinter lily bulbs?
To overwinter lily bulbs, cut the lily back in the fall, dig up the bulb and clean it. Then place the onion in a pot with sand, soil or sawdust and place it in a cool, frost-free place. Plant the onion again in March.
Dig up, settle and replant
The first step is to cut back the lily radically in the fall. But don't be too hasty: Wait until the above-ground parts of the plant have yellowed. The bulbs draw important nutrients from the leaves and stems while they are still intact.
So it continues:
- Dig up onions
- remove all leftover leaves and stems (otherwise risk of rot)
- Clean onion
- Put onion in a pot, box or bucket
- cover with sand, earth or sawdust
- place in a cool, frost-free place
- do not fertilize during wintering
- plant from March
Tips & Tricks
The onions should not dry out even during the winter. The soil should be checked regularly with a thumb sample. If it is dry, water carefully and sparingly.
