Deutzias are very valued in German gardens because of their beautiful flower clusters. They are quite undemanding and therefore also suitable as hedge plants. Short varieties in particular make decorative small hedges in front gardens, on terraces or fences.
What should you consider with a Deutzia hedge?
A Deutzia hedge is undemanding, requires sunny locations, permeable soil, nutritious soil and a planting distance of half the growth width. Regular watering, one-time fertilization in spring and pruning every 2-3 years are important for care.
Create Deutzia hedges
If you plan to create a Deutzia hedge, you must be aware that such a hedge is not a permanent privacy screen. Deutzia are deciduous and appear slightly bare in winter.
Deutzien comes in very different heights. The height ranges from 80 centimeters to four meters. The smaller varieties are better suited for hedges. It is better to plant large varieties individually as an eye-catcher in the garden.
The ornamental shrubs are easy to propagate yourself. If you are already growing Deutzia in the garden, you only need to cut cuttings in the summer.
Prepare the floor
Germans prefer sunny locations, permeable soils and nutritious soil. If Deutzia have already stood in the intended location, you should replace most of the soil beforehand, because the ornamental shrubs are not compatible with themselves.

The best time to plant a Deutzia hedge is either spring or autumn. Maintain a planting distance that is approximately half the growth width that the shrub will reach.
Maintaining Deutzian hedges
The hedge doesn't need much care. Deutzia are slow-growing and only gain between 20 and 45 centimeters in height per year. A Deutzia hedge doesn't require a lot of work because there is no need for annual pruning. Only every two to three years should you cut off old branches as deeply as possible and thin out the bushes a little.
If you want to encourage the bushes to bloom, you can shorten the shoots when the bush has finished flowering.
During the growing season, you should ensure that the soil is moist enough and water regularly. A one-off fertilizer application in spring is also one of the recommended care measures.
Tip
In stores, the Deutzie is primarily offered as a hybrid. These varieties bloom more profusely than the wild forms. However, they are only of limited use as bee pasture.
