All types of carnations can easily be overwintered outdoors, but they cannot tolerate moisture. For this reason, the soil should be very permeable even in winter.
How can you properly overwinter carnations?
Carnations can easily overwinter outdoors as long as the soil is permeable and does not retain moisture. Carnations do not require any special protection, while potted carnations should be protected from frost and watered on frost-free days.
Carnations in the garden
Carnations planted in the garden generally do not need any special winter protection, but can be left as they are. In spring, you should only cut away any parts of the plant that may have frozen from two-year or perennial varieties. Since many carnation species are generally only one to two years old, the question of overwintering is unnecessary. However, in this case you should ensure timely propagation.
Cloves in a pot
Unlike garden carnations, pot carnations should be protected from unfavorable temperatures, as the roots in the planters risk quickly freezing. So place the carnations on a surface, for example made of Styrofoam (€7.00 on Amazon), and in a protected corner. You should also not forget to water the plants in winter - but only on frost-free days.
Tip
If you want to propagate your carnations through cuttings: in regions with mild winters, you can plant the cuttings directly in the fall, then they will root straight away.
