With their large leaves they are reminiscent of lettuce plants, with their numerous, bell-shaped flowers they evoke associations with lungwort - we are talking about bergenias. Falling in love with her is not uncommon. As a result, propagation is obvious, although division of the plant is most recommended.
How can I share Bergenia successfully?
To divide Bergenia, dig out the root ball in autumn with a digging fork or spade, divide it into pieces and then plant them in a sunny to partially shaded location. Watering regularly promotes growth.
The right time to share
After the bergenia has bloomed, it's the perfect time to share it. This is the case from summer to autumn. The ground should still be loose and not covered in frost.
The period between mid-September and the beginning of October is best suited for division. In mid-summer the divided specimens would need a lot of water to grow, which is why early autumn is preferable.
Exact procedure in step-by-step instructions
Only divide he althy plants and when the soil is moist! Proceed as follows:
- Plant has a flat root system
- lift out the root ball with a digging fork (€42.00 on Amazon) or a spade
- divide the root ball once or several times in the middle with a knife, a spade or your bare hands
- divided rhizomes should be 10 cm long
Each section resulting from the division should have a few leaves. You should also be careful not to injure the fine roots too badly! Remove old, brown or broken leaves and immerse the individual specimens in lukewarm water!
Plant in a new place
Continue:
- choose a sunny to partially shaded location
- Dig up the planting hole and loosen it up
- enrich with compost
- Distance between the individual planting holes: at least 40 cm
- for a carpet growth: place 7 to 9 pieces per square meter
- Insert roots flatly
- cover with soil and water well
- water regularly for the next 4 weeks
Sharing – not just for multiplying
Berganie division should be carried out every 4 to 5 years. Not only can the plant be propagated. This procedure simultaneously rejuvenates the mother plant. It can also be transplanted to another location.
Tip
Before dividing the bergenia, it should be cut down. Then dividing is much easier and the plant is then hindered in rooting by excessively long flower stems etc.
