How do I care for Alsca lilies properly?
In order to thrive, Alsace lilies require a sunny, wind-protected location, regular watering and fertilization, and low-lime, nutrient-rich soil. They are conditionally hardy - winter protection is necessary in severe frosts. Propagation is possible by root division or sowing.
Planting the Alstroem Lily
The Alstroemeria lily is not particularly suitable for a natural garden, it is too exotic for that. It likes a warm, wind-protected location that can be sunny. However, she doesn't particularly like the blazing midday sun. Plant the root tubers about twice as deep as their diameter and not too close together. A low-lime, permeable and nutrient-rich soil is well suited for alstroemeria.
Water and fertilize the alkali lily
The alkaline lily needs regular water and fertilizer, but under no circumstances should it become waterlogged. Adjust your watering behavior to the weather and make sure that the soil does not dry out. Approximately every 14 days add some liquid fertilizer (€12.00 on Amazon) to the irrigation water.
Propagate the alstroemeria lily
You can propagate the alstroemeria by root division or sowing. However, you need some patience for both procedures. It is best to divide the roots in early spring, before the alstroemeria sprouts.
The germination capacity of seeds is very limited, so only use fresh seeds. You can collect these from your own plants or buy them from specialist retailers. It is recommended to grow them in a container on the windowsill or in a warm greenhouse because the seeds need light and warmth to germinate.
The Alstroemeria lily in winter
The alkaline lily is only partially hardy; it cannot withstand severe frost over a longer period of time. An exception are special hybrids; they were bred for winter hardiness. Young plants in particular need good winter protection. For short periods of frost, a thick layer of leaves or straw is often sufficient. In a cold area, it is better to overwinter your Alstroemeria in a greenhouse or other room at around 12 - 15 °C.
