The Alstroemeria lily is considered to be partially winter-hardy, at least as it gets older. However, it cannot survive long, harsh winters unprotected. You are on the safe side if you decide to overwinter your Alstroemeria lily frost-free.
After all, the Alsca lily is native to the subtropics and is therefore not used to Central European winters. However, some breeders have now developed hybrids that are better suited to this region. It is not for nothing that the Alsca lily is a popular garden plant and cut flower with interesting symbolism. This plant stands for friendship, affection, devotion and connection.
How do you care for the Alsca lily in winter?
If you have had your alkaline lily for a few years, it will no longer react as sensitively to frost as a young plant. If you live in a mild area, you can leave your plant in the garden. Cover the alstroemeria with a thick layer of leaves or straw to protect it from severe frost. If you have planted the alkaline lily in a container, it is better to overwinter it indoors.
However, it is better to overwinter young plants and particularly sensitive species frost-free. This is especially true if you live in a particularly rough area. The Alsca lily comes from subtropical regions and loves warmth, but it doesn't like cold wind. It is best to overwinter these plants in a greenhouse or winter garden. If you don't have either, then put the alkaline lily in a cool room.
Temperatures of around 12 – 15 °C are ideal. In spring, these plants should be slowly hardened off again by initially only leaving them outside during the day. Although Alstroemeria requires no fertilizer and less water in winter than in summer, you should definitely not forget to water it completely.
The most important winter tips for the Alstroem lily:
- some varieties hardy down to around -15 °C
- protect young plants from frost
- water little
- do not fertilize
- overwinter sensitive plants frost-free
- ideal temperature: 12 – 15 °C
Tip
Especially if you live in an area with long and harsh winters, you should overwinter your Alsca lily in a greenhouse or winter garden.
