While many bush daisies are well hardy, other daisy species are more sensitive to frost. If you want to overwinter them, you shouldn't forget to cut them back beforehand - or only afterwards?
When and how should daisies be cut back before overwintering?
Daisies should be cut back before overwintering: normal daisies close to the ground, daisy stems by a third. However, do not cut bush daisies in autumn, but only cut them back by a third in spring and protect them with fleece if necessary.
Cut back close to the ground in autumn
Before you move your daisies to overwinter, it is recommended to shorten the shoots to just above the ground. The old flowers or seed heads should also be removed. If necessary, a corrective cut can be made in the spring.
Shrub daisies: Don't cut anything until spring
However, this does not apply to bush daisies. It's better with them:
- not to cut them in the fall
- This prevents excessive drying out
- only remove old leaves and flowers
- cut back by a third only in spring
- when overwintering outdoors: In winter, as a precaution, wrap the shoots with fleece (€34.00 at Amazon)
Tip
Daisy stems should be shortened by a third in autumn. A complete cut back is not recommended.
