If you don't keep the mussel flower in an aquarium, but rather outside in a garden pond, for example, you should overwinter it, otherwise it won't survive the winter. And you want to enjoy this pond plant for a long time, right?

How can you overwinter the mussel flower properly?

In order to overwinter the mussel flower successfully, it should be removed from the garden pond at the end of September and placed in a bright, warm room (15-26°C) in a glass jar or aquarium with a thick layer of clay. Ensure high humidity and a pH value of 6.5 to 7.2 if overwintering in an aquarium.

In a container or in an aquarium

Since the mussel flower, as a plant from the tropics, is extremely sensitive to frost, you should overwinter it before the first frost sets in - ideally from the end of September. To do this, the plant is fished out of the garden pond with a landing net (€19.00 on Amazon).

A glass vessel with a thick layer of clay or an aquarium can be used for overwintering. The following aspects are important:

  • bright
  • between 15 and 26 °C warm
  • very moist or wet
  • in the aquarium: pH value between 6.5 and 7.2
  • lighten regularly
  • release again in spring

Tip

Wintering in the aquarium is definitely useful. The mussel flower counteracts the formation of algae.
