They bring spring into our house. To ensure that your tulips in the vase don't run out of floral energy prematurely, it's important to take proper care of them. Browse here for practical tips and tricks on how to preserve the colorful harbingers of spring as cut flowers.
How can I keep tulips in the vase longer?
To make tulips last longer, cut the stem ends at an angle, remove lower leaves, check the water level daily and top up with cold water. Avoid warm locations and keep the vase cooler at night.
Before setting under the knife
Before tulips take their place in the vase, the stem ends are cut to keep them fresh. To do this, take a sharp, clean knife. Standing at a slight angle, cut off the bottom 5-6 mm of the flower stem. In this way, the conductive pathways are exposed over a large area so that plenty of water and nutrients are transported to the flower.
In order to place it correctly in the vase, it is also important to remove the lower leaves. If the leaves are submerged in water, there is a risk of rotting, which significantly affects their durability.
It's better to add water instead of replacing it
Tulipa in the vase is characterized by its great thirst. If you want to make the spring flowers last longer, there should be a supply. However, a complete replacement has a detrimental effect as growth is accelerated and the flowers fade more quickly. How to do it right:
- Check the water level in the vase daily
- If the water level has dropped, fill with fresh water until it is 2 fingers wide below the edge
- Use only cold water, fresh from the tap
The addition of flower food is not absolutely necessary. The water contains enough nutrients to ensure supply.
Re-cut brown discolored stems
Each refill with fresh water is a good opportunity to inspect the flower stems. If brown discoloration appears here, cut again without further ado.
Make it cooler at night
An important criterion in the tulip preservation program is the choice of location. The warmer the environment, the faster the wilt progresses. In a heated living room, this may be unavoidable during the day, because even the tulip enthusiast doesn't want to freeze for a long shelf life. A wise compromise is to move the vase to a cooler place at night.
Tip
Tulips continue to grow in the vase. To ensure that the floral beauties don't have their heads hanging over the edge sooner or later, we recommend using tall, slim glass vases. Here the cut flowers lean comfortably and remain perfectly upright.
