It's so devastating when a knight's star doesn't give us a bloom. If only the long leaves sprout instead, you don't have to accept this shortcoming. A detailed analysis brings to light the cause, which can be eliminated with the help of appropriate measures. We'll explain how to do it here.
Why does my amaryllis only produce leaves and no flowers?
If an amaryllis only produces leaves, it may be due to a lack of light, too much moisture or incorrect care. To promote flower formation, ensure there is sufficient brightness, balanced watering and only cut off withered leaves after the flowering period.
Lack of light results in leaf growth
One of the most common causes for a failure to bloom while the long leaves are sprouting is a location that is too dark. The Ritterstern consistently acts according to the motto: No sun - no flowers. Therefore, take a close look at the lighting conditions so that if in doubt, move the amaryllis to a bright, not full-sun location.
Cutting the leaves does not attract flowers
You won't solve the problem if you cut off the leaves. On a knight's star, the foliage is responsible for the formation of buds inside the bulb. If you cut off the green leaves, all hopes of a flower will come to nothing.
Excess moisture prevents amaryllis from blooming
Immigrated from the warm, rain-poor regions of South America, the Ritterstern is designed for a water balance at a low level. If the onion is constantly in a substrate that is too moist, only the leaves will sprout and the flowering period will be canceled. How to water an amaryllis in a balanced way:
- Do not water after planting or only water sipwise
- Slightly increase the amount of watering as the buds sprout
- Water regularly and more abundantly during the summer growth phase
From July, reduce the amount of water in order to cultivate the Ritterstern completely dry from August to November. Only cut off the leaves when they have withered completely. In mid-November, repot the onion and care for it according to these recommendations.
Encourage leafy knight star to bloom
If no flowers have developed at the end of the regular flowering period, please do not throw in the towel. Continue to water and fertilize the Ritterstern consistently. In mid-May, place the leafy plant and pot in the ground in a sunny, warm location. If the amaryllis feels comfortable, the inflorescence stem will now sprout buds.
Tip
Warm temperatures cause a knight's star in the vase to wilt more quickly. If you place the cut flowers in a bright place with temperatures of an average of 20 degrees Celsius, the brilliant flower display will last for 2 weeks or longer.
