It is often assumed that palm trees only grow in hot climates and therefore always need a place in full sun. However, that is not true, because there are definitely palm tree species that thrive better in partial shade or shade.
What location should palm trees have?
The optimal location for palm trees depends on their type: palm trees that need full sun prefer south-facing windows; East or west windows are suitable for light-loving palm trees; Shade-loving species go well with north-facing windows or in light-flooded rooms.
Choose location according to light requirements
- A palm tree that requires full sun feels very comfortable in a south-facing window. Sunlight should play around the fronds for several hours a day.
- Those species that come from sparse forests like it bright, but direct midday sun should be avoided. An east or west window and a balcony with morning or evening sun are ideal.
- Palm trees that grow in the understory of dense rainforests love shady locations. They can be placed well on a north-facing window and are suitable as green room decorations, which can even be placed a few meters away from the window in light-flooded rooms.
Outdoors in summer
You can care for almost all types of palm trees on the balcony or terrace during the warm summer months. You should also carefully acclimate those palm trees that tolerate full sun to the changed conditions outdoors.
Tip
The plant label provides information about what location requirements a palm tree has. Choose the future location very carefully, as these plants do not like to be moved.
