Brown leaves on a hemp palm primarily indicate care errors. With proper care, you can prevent the leaves from turning brown. What causes brown leaves and how do you prevent discoloration?
Why does my hemp palm have brown leaves?
Brown leaves on hemp palms can be caused by lack of light, improper watering, low humidity, frost, or lack of nutrients. To prevent this, ensure a sunny location, water only when the soil has dried out, spray the leaves and protect the plant from frost.
Causes of brown leaves on hemp palms
- Lack of light
- watered too much or too little
- low humidity
- Frost
- rare nutrient deficiency
Hemp palms need a lot of light. In partial shade, only a few new fronds form, old leaves turn brown and die. Therefore, ensure that the location is as sunny as possible.
Incorrect watering
Water hemp palms regularly, but only when the surface of the soil is completely dry. Avoid waterlogging.
Low humidity is common when kept indoors. You can remedy this by regularly spraying the leaves with low-lime water.
Brown leaves due to frost damage
Even if the hemp palm is hardy and can tolerate temperatures down to -18 degrees, the leaves can freeze. This frost damage is not due to cold, but rather to too much moisture during the winter.
If you overwinter hemp palms in the garden bed, cover the fronds with burlap or garden fleece to protect them from freezing.
Hemp palms in pots don't tolerate that much cold. They should be overwintered at a maximum of -6 degrees. If it gets colder, bring them indoors. Place it in as cool but bright a place as possible.
Tip
The brown leaves don't look very decorative. You are welcome to cut them, but only when the leaves are completely dry. Leave a residue of at least four centimeters on the trunk.
