Zamioculcas zamiifolia, also known as the lucky feather, is one of the succulent houseplants. The plant stores water primarily in its thick, fleshy petioles. However, the plant should not be left dry all the time.
How should you water Zamioculcas properly?
To water Zamioculcas zamiifolia properly, you should feel about two centimeters deep into the soil and only water when the substrate is completely dry. Use rainwater or decalcified tap water and adjust the amount of water to the season.
Watering Zamioculcas – When and how?
When watering you need sensitivity and attention. It is difficult to give exact timing because the water requirements of plants vary depending on sunlight and time of year. In winter, for example, the lucky feather requires significantly less water than in the hot summer. The following clues will give you clear information when it's time to water again:
- Put a finger about two centimeters deep into the soil. Watering is only carried out when the substrate is completely dry.
- If the substrate comes away from the edge of the pot, it is high time to water.
- If you have planted your lucky feather in a clay pot, you can do the knock test: if the pot sounds bright and hollow when you knock on it, it should be watered.
When watering, use rainwater or decalcified tap water if possible. To do this, you can boil it or mix it with distilled water in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 (depending on the degree of hardness).

If you want to keep your plants well looked after even on holiday, close a bottle filled with water with a cork that is pierced lengthways and stick it upside down into the substrate.
