How to propagate Aeonium arboreum?

Aeonium arboreum can be propagated by head or leaf cuttings and sowing. Cuttings are the easier method. Cut a rosette with a short piece of stem or use a single leaf and place it in moist substrate or a household sponge. Then let it grow in a bright, warm place without direct sunlight.

Which methods are suitable for propagating Aeonium?

You can propagate your Aeonium arboreum, simply called rosette thick leaf in German, using head or leaf cuttings, but you can also simply sow them. Cutting cuttings is easier and more successful. Sowing is quite complex and therefore more suitable for advanced hobby gardeners.

Methods for propagating Aeonium arboreum:

  • Head cuttings
  • Leaf cuttings
  • Sowing

How do I grow Aeonium arboreum from cuttings?

If you want to pull a head cutting, then cut off a complete rosette with a five to ten centimeter long trunk piece. But do not take a rosette that has previously bloomed, because this rosette will die. For a leaf cutting you only need a single leaf, which should be cut or plucked from the rosette as deep as you can.

The chance for successful propagation is greatest in spring. Place your cuttings in very sandy, moist substrate or in a standard household sponge with small pores. You can cut the sponge beforehand with a sharp knife so that your cutting won't break off so easily. At least two thirds of the leaf cuttings must still be visible. Then water the sponge or substrate.

Your cuttings now need a bright and warm place, but where they are not exposed to direct sunlight. When your young plants have grown a few centimeters, you can plant them in special substrate for succulents. However, protect the plants from the blazing midday sun for a longer period of time (approx. a year).

Tips and tricks for propagation:

  • best time for all methods is spring
  • keep moist and avoid mold formation
  • place brightly but without direct sunlight
  • Grow seeds at temperatures of 23 °C to 28 °C
  • Sowing under foil or in a mini greenhouse

Tip

Sowing the Aeonium arboreum is quite time-consuming. If you would like to see quick success, then it is better to cut cuttings.
