Not easy to care for, the Clivia takes on mistakes quite quickly, including excessive repotting. This may well result in your clivia not wanting to bloom. You should definitely prevent this.
How often should you repot clivia?
Cliviums should be repotted about every 3 to 4 years to avoid a lack of flowering. Choose a not too large, heavy pot and a combination of peat and sand or potting soil as a substrate. Avoid frequent repotting and do not rotate the pot.
The right plant pot
Choose flower pots that are not too large for clivias; the flowers are often more lush in a smaller pot. However, since these plants can grow quite tall, up to 90 cm, the pot should be relatively heavy. Otherwise, your Clivia could easily tip over. During flowering, the plant also becomes a lot heavier and therefore even more easily unstable.
The right soil for clivia
Normal potting soil or compost soil from the garden is suitable for the Clivia. To avoid waterlogging, place this soil on a drainage layer on coarse gravel or old pottery shards. In fresh soil, the clivia does not need fertilizer for a few weeks or even months, depending on how soon the hibernation period is imminent.
Planting Kindel
Small offshoots, the so-called Kindel, grow on the Clivia over time. You can easily use these for propagation. Before you separate the children from your Clivia, they should be at least 20 to 25 centimeters in size.
It is best to carefully cut off the kindles with a sharp knife shortly after flowering. A mixture of peat and sand or potting soil with sand or peat is suitable as a substrate. It should definitely be well drained. If waterlogged, the tender roots would rot too easily. Therefore, water these young plants only slightly for the time being.
How often should I repot my clivia?
The first repotting of your Clivia is due when the roots clearly grow out of the previous pot. Sometimes this is just a short time after the purchase. You should then give the plant a new pot or fresh soil about every three to four years.
Why does frequent repotting harm the clivia?
The Clivia is quite sensitive. Not only frequent repotting but also repeated location changes within a short period of time are poorly tolerated. Both can cause the clivia not to bloom. Klivia simply take a long time to get used to changing situations. You should also not rotate the pot with the plant. The Clivia prefers the light to always come from the same side.
