To beautify the garden with a mosaic, there are no limits to your imagination. With pebbles you collected yourself from your last vacation or from the nearest gravel factory, you can conjure up artistic shapes for paths, stairs or as wall decorations. These instructions explain how to create your own garden mosaic using stepping stones as an example.
How to make a mosaic in the garden?
To create a mosaic in the garden, you need pebbles, ceramic shards, flower pot saucers, sand, trass cement, silicone spray or vegetable oil and a mason's tub or bucket. Lay the stones in patterns, fill with concrete, let everything dry and lay the stepping stones in the garden.
Material and preparatory work
No mosaic master has fallen from heaven yet. If you are making a mosaic for the first time, you can do it using a stencil. Alternatively, try laying out pebbles freehand on sand to find out the visual effect of the mosaic. The following materials are required to make beautiful mosaic pattern stepping stones yourself:
- Pebbles and ceramic shards in different colors
- Flower pot coaster
- Sand
- Trass cement
- Silicone spray or vegetable oil
- Mason's tub or bucket
For a varied appearance, ideally use trivets in different sizes.
Instructions for a colorful mosaic – this is how it works
First oil the coasters so that the finished mosaic shapes come out easier later. Then mix the desired amount of concrete from water, 2 parts sand and 1 part cement. Aim for a quark-like consistency. This is how it continues:
- Pour concrete 5 cm high into a coaster
- Lay mosaic stones so deep that three quarters of their height is stuck in the concrete
- Set up to dry in a semi-shady to shady location
After 24 to 36 hours the concrete is largely dry. Use a damp sponge to remove the gray cement film. Now you can remove the stepping stones from the mold. Please wait at least 14 days before you can lay the mosaic stepping stones in the garden. Only after this time will the concrete have completely hardened.
Garden areas made of pebble stone mosaic - this is how it works
In a slightly modified form, you can use this method to create complete garden paths or a patio covering as a mosaic. To do this, dig the area 10 to 15 cm deep and fill it with a dry sand-cement mixture. Lay out the pebbles on top as a mosaic.
If you are satisfied with the artistic arrangement, press the mosaic stones with a board until they protrude a maximum of 5 mm. Spray the area repeatedly and carefully with water until the sand-cement mix sets. In the next 14 days, protect your artistic garden mosaic with tarpaulins from the blazing sun and rain.
Tip
You can easily make garden figures from frost-proof, colorful ceramic shards and plaster. A semicircular shape is transformed with red and black mosaic tiles into a pretty ladybug for beds and balconies.
