Not every raised bed has to be 90 centimeters high and 120 centimeters wide - if you only have little space, for example on a balcony or terrace, you can also use a fruit or wine box. These small wooden boxes make wonderful, mobile “raised beds”, especially for plants that don’t have too deep roots, such as lettuces and herbs.
How do you design a raised bed out of fruit crates?
Raised bed fruit crates are ideal for small spaces like balconies or patios - add casters or wheels to make them mobile. Fill the boxes with good potting soil, algae lime, horn shavings and compost and ensure good water drainage through the drainage layer and drainage holes.
Mobile beds on rollers or wheels
Mobile raised bed boxes are extremely practical, especially when space is limited. All you have to do is provide the raised bed containers with castors or wheels on the bottom. This means they can be easily pushed aside later. A mobile wooden or metal base also works well. You can then simply place the wooden or plastic boxes on top. Fill the plant boxes with good potting soil that you have enhanced with algae lime (€28.00 on Amazon), horn shavings and compost.
Tip
To avoid waterlogging, you should also ensure good drainage. Therefore, provide the fruit boxes with drainage holes - if the container does not already have one - and fill in a drainage layer.
