The liver balm (bot. Ageratum) with its lush flowers is a real eye-catcher on the balcony, terrace or in the garden bed. But not every plant fits equally well in every place, not even every liver balm.
Which varieties of Ageratum houstonianum are popular?
There are various Ageratum houstonianum varieties that differ in size and color. Low-growing varieties include Blue Danube, Pacific, Royal Hawaii and White Hawaii. Tall growing varieties include Red Flint, Old Gray and Schnittwunder.
So it's of course a good thing that there are very different varieties of liver balm, some are rather short in stature, others grow up to 60 centimeters high. The flower color also varies from white to pink and violet to various shades of blue. What they all have in common is that they prefer a sunny location and fresh soil. The liver balm is not winter hardy, but is generally perennial.
Where do I plant small liver balm (Ageratum houstonianum)?
The liver balm can also feel good in a rock garden or on your balcony. He is quite versatile in this regard. The low, permanent varieties are particularly suitable for such places. Here too you have a large selection of different colors.
Don't plant your liver balm in the rock garden until after the Ice Saints in May, otherwise it could be damaged by late frost. On warm days he can spend the day on the balcony.
Low lasting varieties of liver balm:
- Blue Danube: medium blue blossom
- Pacific: violet blossom
- Royal Hawaii: dark blue blossom
- White Hawaii: white blossom
Where is the best place to plant large varieties?
The taller growing varieties of liver balm are ideal for placing in your perennial bed. Please note the different growth heights. The “Schnittwunder” variety grows up to 70 centimeters tall, and “Old Gray” grows to around 50 centimeters. The taller the plants are, the further back they should be in the perennial bed so that they do not obscure other plants.
Tall-growing varieties of liver balm:
- Red Flint: red-violet flowers
- Old Grey: grey-blue flowers
- Cutting wonder: pale blue flowers
Caution poisonous
When choosing your plants, you should definitely remember that liver balm is poisonous in all parts of the plant. If you still want to plant it in your family garden, please do so so that the plant is out of reach of children and animals.

All varieties of liver balm are very attractive, but also poisonous.
