Spring begins in the garden around the end of February / beginning of March - depending on the weather. Now it's time for the gardener to lend a hand; trees and other perennial plants must be prepared for the new season. Also, now is the time to plant some trees and bushes.

When should you plant trees in spring?
Spring is the best time to plant trees, especially frost-sensitive deciduous trees and those grown in containers. Make sure to plant the tree before it sprouts and give it compost and horn shavings for he althy rooting.
Many trees are planted in spring
Especially frost-sensitive deciduous trees and those grown in containers should, if possible, not be planted in autumn, but in spring. The best time to do this is when the tree has not yet started budding. Mix the excavated material from the planting hole with plenty of compost and horn shavings, then the tree will receive the right nutrients for he althy rooting. Frost-sensitive trees such as magnolias, on the other hand, should only be planted in the ground when the last late frosts have passed. They then have enough time until next winter to grow and arm themselves against the cold season. Bare-rooted trees, on the other hand, are in their vegetation break, and coniferous trees can even be planted in September.
Don't forget to cut the plants when planting
In the course of planting, roots are crushed or torn off. For this reason, plant pruning is essential and should not be forgotten. To do this, remove weak and damaged branches and shorten the remaining ones by about a third. This rule does not apply to trees that naturally develop with few, thick branches or continue to grow from strongly developed terminal buds. Magnolias, horse chestnuts and rowanberries therefore do not require any pruning. Otherwise, depending on the species and variety, trees should be cut in autumn or winter if possible.
The best care for good budding
Trees already in the garden receive an extra portion of fertilizer in the form of compost and horn shavings in March so that they sprout he althy and strengthened. You should also cut away dead, diseased or broken wood, as this provides an entry point for the now more active fungal spores (and other pathogens). Pay attention to hygiene when cutting and disinfect the tools with a suitable product, which you can purchase from a pharmacy or gardening store. Diseases and pests are often transmitted from one plant to another through contaminated pruning tools.
Tip
Trees grown in pots should be removed from their winter quarters as early as possible, but still need protection from night frosts.
