Bed borders give the garden structure and make work easier because the lawn does not have to be mowed several times a year. A bed border made of natural stone is very attractive and easy to make yourself and fits harmoniously into both natural and modern green spaces.
How do I set a bed border made of natural stone myself?
To make your own bed edging out of natural stone, mark the bed shape, remove the layer of grass, dig a pit, fill in a layer of grit/sand and patio cement, insert the stones flush, and smooth the cement surface and allow it to harden.
Which stones are suitable?
In principle, you can use any natural stone you like. A uniform shape is an advantage, as this stone bed border is easier to set yourself.
The classic among these borders is called a “one-liner”. It consists of natural stone cubes with an edge length of eight to ten centimeters. Alternatively, you can use natural stone slabs. Because of their longer shape, these are particularly suitable for generous borders with straight edges.
These are set in concrete and grouted. This creates an unobtrusive, clear line that goes well with a wide variety of garden styles. Even in winter, when there is little to see of the perennials, this bed border looks very attractive. How is the bed boundary set?
Even if you are not very experienced in setting stones, a bed border made of natural stone can be easily created. Proceed as follows:
- Especially for round or semicircular beds, mark the shape with a string or stick structure.
- Remove the grass layer.
- Dig a pit. This should be slightly wider and about 25 centimeters deeper than the stones.
- Fill in a layer of grit and/or sand and compact it.
- Don't pour in patio cement too sparingly.
- Insert the stones flush and tap them in lightly with a rubber mallet (€40.00 on Amazon).
- Smooth the inside and outside of the cement bed with the float and shape it with a taper upwards.
- Allow to harden well.
- Then it is filled with soil.
Depending on how deep you have placed the stones, the result is a flat surface or an attractive border a few centimeters high.
Tip
Make sure that the bed border reaches deep enough into the ground. This ensures that weeds do not grow under the border into the flower bed. This means you have to pull significantly less weeds.
