Digging is probably the least popular job in the garden. Many gardeners, especially organic ones, now forego it altogether. However, digging cannot always be avoided. But with the right tools you can make digging much easier.
What tools do I need to dig the garden?
To dig up the garden you will need various tools such as spade, garden shovel, digging fork, cultivator, sow tooth and if necessary.a motor hoe. Each tool has its own benefits and is ideal for specific gardening tasks such as loosening, transplanting or removing plants.

Which device you need for your garden depends on the size and the work you plan to do. Spades and shovels should be available in every garden shed.
Spades come in many different shapes
The spade is probably the most important tool for digging up the garden. Its flat blade makes it easy to cut the ground. But it can also be used to transplant bushes and trees, dig up compost and many other tasks. A spade is a must in any garden.
There are numerous types of spades available in gardening stores. So-called women's spades (€16.00 on Amazon), for example, are shorter and lighter than traditional spades.
The garden shovel
The garden shovel has a curved blade. It is primarily used to transport larger amounts of earth, for example to shovel the excavated material onto a wheelbarrow.
The Digging Fork
The digging fork consists of several tines and is used to first loosen the soil and then reach under the plants with the fork. These can be easily removed from the ground without having to cut off the roots.
Grubber and Sauzahn
Grubbers consist of three tines, the sow tooth only has one tine. These are pulled through the earth and loosen it in a gentle way. The intervention in the garden climate is not as drastic as digging with a spade.
Tiller for very large gardens only
Buying or renting a motor hoe is only worthwhile if you regularly dig up large areas in the garden. For example, if an old lawn needs to be removed, the gardener can make the work much easier with a motor hoe.
Tip
To create a new bed in the garden, you don't necessarily have to dig up the intended area. By covering them with cardboard and mulching, garden beds can be created without much effort.
