Chestnuts or chestnuts, both are names for chestnuts that ripen in autumn and come onto the market. They taste good on their own or as a side dish with the Christmas goose. However, before you can eat or process the chestnuts, they must be baked or cooked and then peeled.

How can you easily peel chestnuts?

Peeling chestnuts is easy using three methods: in the oven at 175° degrees fan / 200° degrees electric stove for 20 minutes, on the stove in a pot of water for 20 minutes or in the microwave for a minute heat. Beforehand, the chestnuts should be scored crosswise and placed in water for an hour.

Peeling chestnuts made easy

If you follow a few tips and tricks when peeling the chestnuts, peeling the delicious fruit will be done quickly. Choose between three peeling options:

  • Peel chestnuts using the oven
  • Cook chestnuts on the stove and then peel them
  • Peel chestnuts using the microwave

In all variants, the fruits are first scratched crosswise on the curved side. This means the peel will come off easily later and the pulp won't burst when heated. If you put the chestnuts in cold water for an hour beforehand, peeling them will be even easier.

Peeling with oven

  1. Preheat the oven to 175° degrees fan / 200° degrees electric stove.
  2. Put baking paper on a baking tray and put the chestnuts on it.
  3. Place a fireproof bowl with water on the tray with the fruit. This prevents the chestnuts from drying out.
  4. Roast the chestnuts for about 20 minutes until the skin cracks.
  5. Take the fruit out of the oven and let it cool down a little.
  6. Peel the warm chestnuts using a knife.
  7. It's best to hold the chestnuts with an oven mitt so that you don't burn yourself.
  8. Put the peeled fruits in a tea towel and rub off the remaining skin and hairs.

Peeling by cooking

  1. Put the scored chestnuts in a large pot.
  2. Fill the pot with water and place it on the stove.
  3. Cook the chestnuts for about 20 minutes.
  4. Drain the water and peel the chestnuts while they are still warm. Here too, use an oven mitt for protection.

Peeling chestnuts in the microwave

  1. Place the chestnuts in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Add some water and close the bowl with a lid.
  3. Heat the chestnuts in the microwave for a minute. The resulting water vapor should peel off the shell. The process may need to be repeated again.
  4. Remove the peel with a knife.
