How can the pubic flower be successfully propagated?

The pubic flower can be propagated by cuttings or sowing. When propagating cuttings, top cuttings are planted in a peat-sand mixture and covered with plastic bags. When sowing, seeds are distributed in sowing soil and covered with foil.

How to propagate the pubic flower

There are two ways to propagate the pubic flower:

  • with cuttings
  • by sowing

Propagation of cuttings

You can propagate cuttings all year round. This is how it works:

  1. Prepare small pots with a mixture of peat and sharp sand in a 1:1 ratio.
  2. Cut top cuttings with a length of ten to 15 centimeters from the mother plant.
  3. Place two to three cuttings in each pot.
  4. Put a translucent plastic bag over the cuttings or pots. In this way you ensure a consistently high level of humidity.
  5. Place the pots in a bright place, but not in full sun.
  6. It is important to take the temperature requirements into account: The room should be at room temperature; the soil temperature must be between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. If you propagate your pubic flowers in winter, it makes sense to place the pots on a radiator.
  7. As soon as the first shoots appear on the cuttings, you know that roots have formed.
  8. Remove the plastic bags.
  9. Water the young plants, but only moderately. Make sure that the ball of the pot always remains evenly moist.
  10. After another one to two weeks, transplant the young pubic flowers into their final planter. The aim is to continue cultivating them like adult plants.

Note: Do not root the cuttings in a glass of water. Otherwise, the sensitive roots may suffer significant damage and collapse later when planted correctly.

Propagation by sowing

Although propagating the pubic flower from cuttings is considered the best method, you can also try sowing.

  1. First scratch the seeds briefly to facilitate germination.
  2. Fill your chosen sowing container with sowing soil.
  3. Spread the seeds on top and then cover them lightly with soil.
  4. Moisten the substrate.
  5. Cover the planter with translucent foil.
  6. To prevent mold formation and rot, you should ventilate the film briefly once a day.
  7. After germination, proceed as with cuttings.

Tips:

  • A mini greenhouse is even better than a pot and foil.
  • Use commercially available cactus soil or alternatively young plant soil.
  • Depending on the quality of the seeds, it can take a few weeks to several months before germination begins.
