With the colorful flowers of tulips, daffodils or ranunculus you can bring spring into your home, even if the gray of winter still prevails outside. We'll tell you how to properly care for your colorful home decoration so that you can enjoy the flowers for a long time.
How do you properly care for spring flowers for the vase?
For long-lasting spring flowers in the vase, remove leaves that protrude into the water, cut the stems diagonally with a sharp knife and fill the vase with cold, soft water. Place the flowers in a protected place, change the water regularly and add freshness if necessary.

Tulips
Tulips are by far the most varied bulb flowers that you can get in many different colors, both double and unfilled. You can buy these signs of spring almost everywhere from January onwards. It's easy to tell how fresh a tulip is: run your fingers along the stem if it squeaks. In addition, tulips must not be fully bloomed for the vase.
When you get home, care for the flowers as follows:
- Strip off any leaves that would stick into the water. This prevents rot. In addition, the flowers use less water and stay beautiful longer.
- Cut flowers freshly with a sharp knife, even if this has already been done at the florist.
- Do not use scissors to cut them, as these will crush the stems and the tulips will wilt quickly.
- Place the cutting device at a slight angle. This cut increases the area with which the flowers can absorb water.
- Many tulips grow very quickly in the vase. Therefore, the container should be about two thirds as high as the flower stems.
- The flower vase must be absolutely clean. It is filled with a few centimeters of cold water that is as soft as possible. Do not fill the vase too full, as the stems will rot after a short time. It's better to top up some fluids every day.
- Cut mushy stems fresh after a few days.
Daffodils
Even with daffodils, the flowers should not have fully opened yet. The heralds of spring secrete a mucus that causes other flowers in the vase to wilt. Therefore, leave daffodils alone or put the flowers in a separate vase for 24 hours. Only then arrange them in the container with the tulips and do not cut the heralds of spring again.
Ranunculus
These colorful cut flowers will be available to buy from December. With good care, the large flowers last up to two weeks indoors:
- Cut the stems fresh with a sharp knife.
- Fill a clean vase with cold, soft water to which you can add a little freshness agent.
- Ranunculus are very thirsty, but they don't like to be up to their necks in water. It's better to top up with some fluid every other day.
- These harbingers of spring react sensitively to direct heat and drafts. Therefore, place the flowers in a protected place.
Tip
To clean flower vases, you can use the same products that are also used in the bathroom. These reliably remove limescale and germs.
