Spring onions are a delicate ingredient in hearty dishes and salads. The culture is uncomplicated because the plant proves to be grateful and undemanding. Since it is perennial, you can harvest the fresh leaves over several years.

How do you plant spring onions correctly?

Spring onions can be planted outdoors as early plants or divided specimens can be planted in the bed. Planting is done in double rows with 5 cm distance between the plants and 30-40 cm between the double rows.

Planting early plants

Scallions can be grown in planters from spring to autumn. If the young plants are strong enough, they can be moved outdoors in late summer. You can plant spring onions on harvested beds because they cope well with the available nutrients. Planting is done in double rows at a distance of five centimeters, with a distance of 2.5 centimeters between the plants. The next double row is about 30 to 40 cm away.

Set shared copies

The spring onions grow like clumps, with the individual clumps consisting of several shoots. These can be dug up and shared. Make sure that each section has at least three shoots. Place the plants in the bed at a sufficient distance from each other. This allows you to continually multiply a plant so you don't have to sow spring bulbs.

Regrowing spring onions

Purchased spring onions are perfect for growing, even if the roots have already dried up. Harvest the green parts of the plant and leave a shoot about three to five centimeters long on the white root tuber. This forms the basis for propagation.

Water glass method

Place the root in a glass of water and change it after 48 to 72 hours. After a few weeks, fresh shoots will appear that you can harvest continuously. Since this hydroculture does not provide sufficient nutrients, the lifespan in the glass is limited. After two to three harvests the plant is exhausted.

Earth method

The harvest will be more productive if you plant the onion bulbs in soil. A plant pot (€79.00 on Amazon) or the garden bed is suitable for further cultivation. The perennial spring onion sprouts and provides fresh supplies every two to three weeks.

Requirements of spring onions:
