Some anemones bloom in spring, other anemones in fall. There are tuber-forming and non-tuber-forming species. The anemones also differ noticeably visually. Do they all at least have good winter hardiness? This would be necessary so that they can stay outside permanently.
Which anemones are sensitive to frost?
Bulb-forming spring anemonesare not sufficiently hardy. They have to stay frost-free indoors over the winter. Anemone perennials are sufficiently hardy. They only need light winter protection in the first few years. Pot specimensmust be winterized and given a protected location. Freshly propagatedYoung plants are overwintered indoors.
How hardy are anemones?
The differentanemone species have differentwinter hardiness. Tuber-forming spring anemones are almost never hardy. Some varieties are described as winter hardy. But they cannot survive high temperatures below zero either. The noble anemones (Anemone coronaria) are particularly sensitive to frost. Autumn anemone perennials (Anemone hupehensis), on the other hand, are well hardy. With some frost-sensitive exceptions:
- Young plants after propagation
- freshly planted specimens
- recently transplanted perennials
- Anemones in a pot
- Perennials in rough locations
How do I protect frost-sensitive anemone perennials in the bed?
Plants freshly propagated by sowing seeds cannot be adequately protected outside. You should hibernate indoors frost-free for the first year. This also applies to plants that were obtained by division in the fall. All other frost-sensitive specimens get by in the bed with modest winter protection.
- Cover root area
- with leaves, fleece, brushwood or compost soil
- Don't cut anemones in autumn yet
- Tie shoots together
How can I protect my autumn anemone in the pot?
Wrap the bucket in jute or fleece before the first frost. Then place it on a protective wall, on a cold-insulating Styrofoam plate (€25.00 on Amazon).
How can tuberous anemones be overwintered frost-free?
In a very protected location, it may be sufficient to overwinter the tuberous anemones under a thick layer of leaves. But most tuberous anemones have to be removed from the bed in autumn. First wait until the plants have gotten their energy back into the tubers. Then cut off the yellowed leaves and remove the tubers from the soil. First let them dry and then remove the adhering soil. Overwinter them indoors frost-free until spring. Replant them in spring when all danger of frost has passed.
Tip
Protect autumn anemones from moisture in winter
Autumn anemones are not very sensitive to frost, but moisture in the root area can be very damaging to them. Make sure that water can drain away easily. As winter protection, only use dry covering material to prevent rot.
