Growing fruit and vegetables in your own four walls is very trendy. In this article we clarify whether it is possible to care for an apple tree indoors and whether the tree would even bear fruit here.
Can an apple tree be cultivated in the apartment?
An apple tree cannot be maintained permanently in an apartment. It needs the change of seasons and cannot cope with the extreme conditions for plants that prevail indoors, especially in winter.
Why doesn't the apple tree grow well in the house?
Various location factors are responsible for the good growth of apple trees (Malus domestica), the interaction of which is important.
So must:
- Light,
- Ambient temperature,
- Water and nutrient supply,
- the changing of the seasons
meet the individual needs of the fruit tree. Since this is not the case with an apple tree indoors, unlike houseplants, it will die sooner or later.
Tip
Apple trees grow well in pots
But you don't have to go without your own apple tree, provided you have a balcony or terrace. A columnar apple or a duo tree grafted onto a weakly growing rootstock thrives well in a pot, takes up very little space and enchants the outdoor area in spring with its flowers and later with the pretty-looking, aromatic-tasting fruits.
