The “Beautiful one from Boskoop” (Malus ‘Boskoop’) is one of the old apple varieties and the trees have often been in the garden for many years. The sprawling tree not only provides delicious fruit, but as a house tree it also provides valuable shade in summer with its attractive crown.
How old does a Boskop apple tree get?
120 years and even older, a well-cared for Boskop apple tree can grow. However, after about 35 years the yield decreases. If the fruit tree has been regularly cut and fertilized, even an old Boskoop will still produce many tasty apples.
Under what conditions does a Boskop apple tree grow old?
In order for the tree to grow old, thesomespecial requirementsof the Boskopshould be met:
- Sunny, at best partially shaded location.
- Nutritious, well-drained, moist soil.
- In cool locations, the fruit tree should be protected from the wind.
In warm, rainless summers, drought, to which Boskop apple trees are very sensitive, can lead to drought stress. This has a decidedly negative effect on the vitality of the fruit tree. If there is no rain, water your Boskoop apple tree thoroughly and mulch the tree disc.
Tip
The Boskop is a wonderful storage apple
Tart apple lovers can consume Boskop immediately after harvest. However, this type of apple only develops its full flavor after it has been stored for a few weeks. Place the apples in a single layer in wooden boxes and place them in a dark place where the temperature is around four degrees. Bosko apples last here until the end of April.
