No matter how well you get along with your neighbors, many prefer a protected space in their second living room for sunbathing or a family conversation. Pretty overgrown trellises fit harmoniously into the garden idyll and provide the desired screening. You can also use trellises to create structured garden spaces.

A seat shielded by climbing plants

Delimited by trellises, a seat is created where you can read or enjoy your coffee undisturbed. Choose a sturdy trellis as this will have to support the weight of the plants for many years. The elements should be constructed in such a way that the plants are able to grow not only in height but also in width in a species-specific manner. As a result, the climbing artists cover the entire structure over time and it becomes an extremely decorative design element.

For climbing plants whose shoots grow vertically upwards and which wrap themselves in a circle around a suitable object, simple plant sticks made of hardwood that you stick into the ground not too far away are sufficient. Climbing plants with or without adhesive disks, on the other hand, require trellis fences with grids that ensure a stable hold.

You can find a great selection of trellises at Holzland.

Which plants are suitable?

Since climbing plants should thrive for a long time in the place they have chosen, you should choose them carefully.

Popular climmers are:

Art Short description
Clematis Lush flowers and some attractive fruit clusters. Requires a cool, moist root base but warmth and sun for the flowers. Humus-rich, calcareous substrate is preferred.
Ivy Evergreen ensures privacy even in the cold season. Thrives just as well in full sun as in shade, provided the soil is permeable and rich in humus.
Honeysuckle The flowers exude an intoxicatingly sweet scent. Grows in sun and partial shade in nutrient-rich, well-drained substrate.
Climbing hydrangea Enchanting with flowers up to 25 centimeters wide. Prefers partial shade and well-drained, humus-rich soil.
climbing rose These usually only need to be cut once a year. They need a lot of sun and a humus-rich, clay-rich substrate.
Knotweed Enchanted with dense clouds of white flower spikes. Very undemanding.
Wild Wine Turns bright red in autumn, making it an attractive eye-catcher in the garden. Undemanding.

Properly care for wooden trellises

If you choose a plastic or metal trellis fence, it does not require any further care after planting. This is a little different with wood, which fits very well into the garden thanks to its natural look.

Renovate the trellis preferably when you cut back the plants. Check whether any struts are broken and replace them if necessary. A fresh coat of paint is necessary at regular intervals, depending on how the wood has been treated:

  • Thin-film glazes are applied every three years,
  • Thick-film glazes reapplied every 5 years.
  • If you have decided on opaque varnish, a new coat of paint must be applied after 7 years at the latest.

Tip

Densely overgrown trellises offer protection and food to many living creatures. Birds like to nest in ivy or Virginia creeper branches. Bumblebees and bees feast on the flowers. Beetles and spiders, which helped you in the fight against vermin, find hidden shelter in the climbing plants.
