When it gets warmer outside and there is greenery everywhere, the new gardening season that many have longed for begins. Gardening is particularly important in spring, as this is the time of year when you lay the foundation for a blooming garden year. You can find out which tasks you shouldn't forget and how you can do them easily in the following article.
Maintaining garden tools
If you simply stowed away your shovel, hoe and rake in the fall, you should first pay a little attention to these equipment:
- Sharpen spades and scissors and oil them.
- Check all stems. Replace dilapidated handles.
- Clean required utensils such as growing pots and flower bowls thoroughly.
- Check the functionality of electrical devices. If necessary, have this repaired.
Spring treatment for the lawn
So that the grass grows back strong and lush green, you must first rake off all the leaf residue. Then tackle bare and mossy areas:
- Scarify the area. This scratches the ground about 2 millimeters deep and removes the thatch. More oxygen reaches the roots, the grass grows thicker and the lawn becomes more durable.
- Once the stalks have reached a height of around 7 millimeters, you can mow for the first time. Shorten the lawn to about half a centimeter.
- Growth is then supported by applying lawn fertilizer.
Getting the beds ready for spring
To ensure that flowering plants sprout vigorously, cut off the stems remaining as winter protection in spring. Also remove old leaves under which the fresh shoots could rot.
In spring, unsightly gaps in the bed are particularly noticeable. Now fill these with new perennials. You can find many great tips for harmonious, easy-care bed planting in the garden guide from Aldi Süd.
Fertilization with compost
Loosen the soil between the plants a little and work in compost. This natural fertilizer nourishes the soil and at the same time provides valuable nutrients to the plants. If necessary, you can also apply a little special fertilizer.
The first sowing
In the early spring you can grow annual summer flowers and vegetables in the early spring.
In protected locations, with a warming fleece blanket, you can sow robust vegetables such as lettuce, early carrots, beans, radishes or onions directly into the bed in March/April.
Pruning trees and bushes
Fruit trees and evergreen bushes are shortened in spring. But don't just cut around the outside until you like the shape, keep removing old branches from the middle down to the bottom.
Tip
During the forsythia bloom is the optimal time for spring pruning of the roses. Shorten frozen, diseased and damaged shoots at a slight angle five millimeters above a bud.
