Does tea tree oil help against boxwood borer?
There areno reportsof tea tree oil being used against boxwood borers. That doesn't necessarily say anything about its effectiveness against this pest. Rather, preference is given to usingother established means that have proven to be effective and are environmentally friendly.
Can I use another oil against boxwood borers?
Yes, another natural oil is suitable:Neem oil It has already been used many times and successfully against boxwood moth infestation. The oil (including emulsifier) is diluted very heavily with water and sprayed on the boxwood on an overcast day, a total of three times at intervals of one week. Caterpillars that come into contact with the solution are damaged and eventually die. From March onwards it can also be sprayed preventatively, as its scent keeps butterflies away from the boxwood and thus prevents egg laying.
What should I consider when trying tea tree oil?
If you want to try to defeat the boxwood borer (cydalima perspectali) with tea tree oil, you have to be very careful. If an attempt fails, it can cost you valuable time. It is better to use tea tree oil first for a weaker infestation andcheck the effect closely. Otherwise, use the tea tree oil as you would when controlling other pests:

- spray on an overcast, rain-free day
- wet theentire book
- repeat at regular intervals
How else can I fight the borer inexpensively?
The cheapest way is to collect the caterpillars by hand. If a pressure washer is available, you can also use it to rinse them from the branches, collect them and dispose of them. A very effective soft soap solution can also be produced and sprayed cheaply. Also encourage natural enemies such as sparrows and great tits.

The earlier boxwood borers are discovered, the greater the chances of getting rid of them using simple means and little effort. Special pheromone traps attract male butterflies and thus reveal the presence of the pest. Since this takes place before the larvae hatch, you can prevent greater damage by acting immediately.
