What types of peas are there?
There are different types of peas, which are divided into 3 main types: Pale pea (e.g. East Frisian field pea, Very Earliest May, Small Rhinelander), Marker pea (e.g. Salzmünder Edelperle, Lancet, Ranka) and sugar pea (e.g. B. Hendriks, Gray Variegated Flowers, Groot Zuckeafen).

Pale pea - shell peaThe frost-tolerant type of pea is mainly used as a dried pea. Their pods have an inner skin. In terms of taste, it tends to be bitter due to the high starch content.
Marker peaVisually, the marker pea hardly differs from the pale pea. Those who prefer a mild, sweet taste prefer this type. It can only be eaten fresh. It is not dried when cooking. Knowledgeable gardeners don't plant them until April.
Sugar peaAs a popular snack vegetable, the sugar pea impresses with its delicate, tasty taste. Since the parchment layer inside is missing, the pods can also be eaten. In terms of cultivation, it is at the same level as marsh peas. Some varieties also tolerate earlier sowing.
Tasty and high-yielding Pale pea varieties
East Frisian field peaA pink-flowering variety that grows up to 40 cm high. Thanks to the tight habitus, there is no need for a climbing aid. Sowing from March – harvest from June.
Earliest MayThe popular variety lives up to its name. It grows up to 110 cm high. Sowing from February – harvest from May.
Little RhinelanderAt 50 cm, the tried and tested pea variety remains quite small. Planted in double rows, the plants support each other. Sowing from March – harvest from June.
Aromatic, medium early marsh pea varieties
Salzmünder EdelperleIts height ranges from 80 to 100 cm. The peas taste equally good raw and cooked. Sowing in April – harvest from July.
LancetThe variety scores with high yields and uncomplicated cultivation without support. Sowing in April – harvest from July.
RankaThe ideal variety for the freezer. Delivers a safe harvest. Sowing in April – harvest from July.
Tender sugar pea varieties
HendriksBright white flowers and bright green pods. An early variety for impatient connoisseurs. Sowing from March – harvest from June.
Grey variegated flowersA decorative flower in purple and pink over light green pods. Sowing from March – harvest from June.
Groot ZuckeafenTall growing variety up to 200 cm with pretty white flowers and juicy, sweet peas. Sowing from April – harvest from July.
