If you want to sow radishes in the garden, you should definitely start in February: in the cold frame, in the greenhouse, on the windowsill. Sowing can also take place in June. It depends on the variety.
When and how should you sow radish?
Radish can be sown from February to September depending on the variety. Summer radish is grown in cold frames, greenhouses or on the windowsill, while winter radish is sown directly outdoors. Make sure there is enough light, consistent water supply and loose soil for optimal growth.
Sowing the summer radish
Some summer radish varieties can be sown early in the year. As early as February, the summer radishes are grown in a cool room on the windowsill or sown in the greenhouse or cold frame. The seedlings should be trained and hardened off a little before moving outdoors. To avoid bolting, sowing outdoors is not recommended before April. If the outside temperature stays at 12 °C, scatter the seeds in the ground.
Sowing the winter radish
The winter radish is sown directly into the prepared beds from the end of June to the end of September. It is ideal as a mixed crop between carrots, tomatoes and beans. The neighborhood or radish is not beneficial as a follow-up crop after other cruciferous plants.
Sowing methods general
- in rows
- Row spacing between 20 and 35 cm, including plant spacing in the row
- Sowing depth of 2-3 cm
Since the differences between the varieties are sometimes considerable, it is advisable to carefully follow the instructions on the seed bag (€3.00 on Amazon). The giant radishes in particular require more space and require deeper loosening of the soil.
Demands on the soil
It is enough if the soil contains the remains of the nutrients incorporated for the previous crop. The easy-care radish can cope with this. For varieties that are intended to produce long, straight fruit, it is important to loosen the soil deeply. This makes it easier for the tubers. Growing radishes also requires sufficient light and, above all, an even supply of water.
