It took a long time, now the first stalks can finally be harvested from the third year after planting. White asparagus is pierced, green asparagus is simply cut off. This is how it's done.
When and how do you harvest asparagus correctly?
Asparagus is ready to harvest in the third year after planting: green asparagus is cut off just above the ground, white asparagus is cut when cracks are visible in the wall. Harvesting takes place in the morning and afternoon and ends on June 24th for plant regeneration.
When will asparagus be harvested?
It takes time until home-grown asparagus is ready to harvest. You can only start harvesting asparagus in the third year. If you harvest in the second year, you will weaken the plant. It produces fewer rods and needs to be replaced sooner.
Asparagus begins to grow when the ground has warmed to twelve degrees. Depending on the weather, the asparagus season begins in mid-April.
Harvesting green asparagus
Green asparagus is one of the above-ground varieties that is quite easy to harvest. Once the poles are long enough, they are cut just above the ground. The flower must still be tightly closed.
Pricking white asparagus
Pale asparagus is grown in a heaped up bank. You have to prick the asparagus as soon as cracks appear on the wall.
The rod is exposed with two fingers. Using a sharp knife or asparagus knife, cut the stalk as deep as possible.
After the cut, the earth is filled up again and the wall is tapped into place.
How often do you have to harvest?
When it is very warm, asparagus ripens very quickly. Walk through the rows in the morning and afternoon and look for asparagus that is ready to be harvested.
Harvest on time. White asparagus changes color when exposed to sunlight. With green asparagus, the flowers open quickly, so the asparagus is no longer as aromatic.
Until when does the harvest season last?
Asparagus is a seasonal vegetable. The harvest season only lasts until June 24th. From this day onwards, there is no longer any harvesting in order to give the plant enough time to recover.
