Due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, the avocado is a very he althy food - but only for humans. The fruits also contain persin, a substance that can have serious he alth consequences for dogs and cats.
Is avocado harmful to dogs?
Avocado is dangerous for dogs in large quantities because the substance persin it contains, especially in the seed core and the peel, can lead to symptoms of poisoning such as shortness of breath, water retention and cramps. However, occasional small amounts of pulp are harmless.
Symptoms of poisoning occur within 24 hours
Persin is mainly contained in the seed core and the peel of the avocado; there is only a little of it in the pulp. For this reason, dogs should neither eat the pit (whose swallowing can lead to an intestinal obstruction) nor the avocado as a whole. However, small amounts of the pulp are occasionally OK. Symptoms of poisoning usually appear within 24 hours. Signs of avocado poisoning are:
- Shortness of breath
- Water retention
- cough
- increased pulse rate
- Diarrhea / Vomiting
- Cramps
An excess of avocado leads to heart damage and death to the animal.
Tips & Tricks
Chocolate, cocoa, onions, garlic, leeks, tomatoes, peppers as well as grapes and raisins can also have fatal consequences for your four-legged friend. On the other hand, vegetable and sweet corn are ideal as dog food, but should only be fed in moderation due to the high sugar content.
