The spindle bush is quite robust and doesn't take offense easily. If it is pruned frequently, it will continue to grow even more densely. You can cut it into shape as you like or simply limit its height.
How do I cut a spindle bush correctly?
To properly prune spindle bush, use sharp secateurs, avoid bruising, and remove diseased or injured branches first. Cut away crossing branches and shape the plant into the desired shape. Please observe the legal regulations when trimming hedges.
Annual pruning
Don't cut your spindle bush at all, then depending on the variety it can grow very sprawlingly. Pruning in spring or autumn is therefore recommended. If you prefer very dense growth, you can also prune your spindle bush twice a year. The same applies if the plant should have a special shape.
Make sure that your pruning shears (€56.00 on Amazon) are really sharp and do not crush the branches you are cutting. Such injuries provide an entry point for diseases and pests. First cut away the diseased or injured parts of the plant. If two branches cross each other, remove one of them. Then cut your spindle bush into the desired shape and possibly thin it out a little.
The hedge trimming of the spindle bush
When trimming hedges, be sure to follow the regulations that apply in your municipality, otherwise you may have to pay a high fine. Nationwide, hedges may not be pruned between March and September, among other things to protect birds that breed in them. But states and municipalities are allowed to issue additional regulations. So cut your spindle bush hedge in early spring or autumn.
Cut cuttings
If you would like to propagate your spindle bush, you can try this with cuttings. It is best to cut the required cuttings in mid-summer or during the semi-annual topiary on your spindle bush.
Short the cut, slightly woody shoots to a length of approx. 15 - 20 cm. Remove the leaves at the bottom and place the cuttings in a pot with garden or growing soil and water them well..
The most important things in brief:
- cut only with really sharp tools
- Avoid bruising at all costs
- observe the laws when trimming hedges
- cut off sick and injured branches first
- always remove one of the crossing branches
- finally thin out and cut into shape
Tip
Use the regular topiary to cut cuttings for propagation.
