The first peaches are usually available in the supermarket from the beginning of May. These fruits - mostly harvested unripe and ripened - come from North Africa. The main season for fresh fruit, on the other hand, is the summer months of July and August.
When is peach season?
The peach season starts in the supermarket in May with imported fruits from North Africa. However, the peak season for fresh, locally grown peaches is during the summer months of July and August. Peaches can be harvested in your own garden until September.
Harvest peaches until September
You can harvest fresh, juicy peaches from your own garden from July to September. A distinction is made between early, medium and late ripening varieties, with most varieties being ready for consumption from around mid-August to early September. One of the earliest peaches is the old American variety Amsden, which tastes best fresh from the tree from the end of July. On the other hand, the Red Ellerstädter (also known as Vorgebirgspeach or Kernechter vom Vorgebirge) is harvested very late, from around mid-September. The vineyard peaches are also not ripe until September - or at the beginning of October depending on the weather.
Tips & Tricks
If possible, you should only buy peaches in season. Outside the peach season, the supermarket fruits usually come from overseas and are picked unripe due to the long transport. These fruits never achieve the delicious aroma of truly tree-ripened peaches.
