Normally, when there is a wasp infestation, you can console yourself with the fact that the colonies only live in short cycles anyway. But what if displaced wasps keep coming back or a colony settles in the same place year after year?
How can I stop wasps from coming back?
To prevent wasps from returning again and again, nests should be removed professionally, entry holes should not be closed and the smell of wasps should be eliminated. Avoid aggressive reactions at the dinner table and release relocated nests at least 2-3 kilometers away.
General wasp etiquette
You should generally be on good terms with wasps. Not only because they react quite unpleasantly when confronted with anger, but also because they are an integral part of the ecosystem and are simply part of reality.
When dealing with animals, prudence is particularly important. Avoid an angry attitude towards them, as this will only make them stubborn. Especially in the following cases:
- Unauthorized removal of nests from and around the house
- Closing entry holes in nests
- Hectic behavior when wasps visit the dinner table
If a wasp colony has nested in your attic, in a roller shutter box or in the masonry of your house, you should not start combating it yourself, or at least not without careful preparation.
If you move a wasp nest yourself, you not only have to pay close attention to the right time, the right method and the right equipment, but also to a sufficiently distant release location. If you do not move the prey further than 2-3 kilometers from your house, the wasps will find their way back to their original location.
You should thoroughly clean the area of a nest that has been removed - preferably by a professional - or a nest that was orphaned in the fall to remove the smell of wasps. He can entice other young queens to build a nest here again the following year.
The same applies if wasps have nested in the window frame or in a gap between the facade insulation. What you should definitely not do here is to close the entry holes. Firstly, you encourage the trapped animals to continue eating through the insulation material to get free. Secondly, individuals left outside react aggressively to closed entrances and do not retreat in resignation.
You can also trigger aggressiveness in wasps at the dinner table by frantically flailing around and blowing away. If you display such behavior, you shouldn't be surprised if many more wasps come shortly afterwards. The very obvious attacks make them really angry, so they call in reinforcements to fight back together.
