The strikingly shaped leaves of the Kaffir lime are indispensable, especially in Thai cuisine. They are added either whole or cut into hair-thin strips, primarily to soups and curries. Since the spice is very difficult to obtain in this country, lovers of Thai cuisine should keep such a tree themselves.
How do I properly overwinter a Kaffir lime?
In order to successfully overwinter a Kaffir lime, the plant should be stored in a cool (10-12°C) and bright place, in warmer temperatures, provide additional light with a plant lamp and adjust the watering frequency to the room temperature.
Overwintering Kaffir Lime
The Kaffir lime is one of the more complicated types of citrus; it always needs a little more light, warmth and care than its sisters or cousins. You should definitely overwinter the plant in a cool but bright place. The Kaffir lime prefers temperatures of around 10 to 12 °C. As a general rule - as with all other citrus species - the warmer the winter quarters, the more light the plant needs. However, since the amount of light in German winters is far from sufficient, you should definitely install an additional plant lamp (€79.00 on Amazon) if the winter is warm (i.e. at room temperature).
Tips & Tricks
The frequency of watering also depends on the temperature in the winter quarters: the warmer it is, the more water your Kaffir lime needs.
