When and how to cut the blood plum in summer?
Blood plums should be pruned in the summer after flowering. Remove entire branches, vertical new shoots and water shoots to preserve the growth character. Make sure you have clean cutting tools and seal large cuts with tree resin.
Very large blood plums
After lush growth, the rose plant can be thinned out during the summer months. To do this, remove entire branches, including twigs and leaves. The growth character of the Prunus cerasifera Nigra should be preserved.
If you want the tree to increase its fullness and height, it is advisable to cut off the entire central shoot. In this way, all of the growth energy is transferred to the remaining side shoots. The blood plum gets a shapely crown.
This means:
- don't cut all the branches
- definitely: branches growing inwards
- Basic shape of the crown or hedge is retained
- cut on a string, do not leave any stems

- ideal time: after the end of the flowering period
Attention: water shooters
In individual cases, a radical cut of the blood plum is necessary. This takes place in spring. Numerous water shoots often grow during the summer months. From August onwards, remove these shoots completely.
Remove vertical shoots
Pruning in late spring leads to the development of many vertical new shoots. These should be removed by July at the latest. Select strong shoots. Weaker specimens can remain standing. If necessary, divert these to other branches.
Disease or pest infestation
Sick trees or bushes can be pruned at any time. Make sure that infected wood, leaves and fruits are to be disposed of with household waste.
