Chervil is very similar to parsley - but it has its own interests when it comes to sowing. How is it sown, when is the best time and which is the ideal location?
How to sow chervil step by step?
Sowing chervil can be done by scattering fresh seeds on nutrient-rich, well-drained substrate (light germinator), watering them and keeping them moist. Ensure a germination temperature of 18-20 °C and a germination time of 15-20 days. The ideal location is partially shaded.
The right timing
Since chervil is an annual, it has to be grown every year. The right timing is crucial! If you want it to go outdoors, it is advisable to only sow it after the Ice Saints in May. If you are brave and live in mild regions, you can try sowing at the end of March. Chervil tolerates cold to a certain extent.
On the other hand, chervil can be grown at home all year round. It is recommended to sow it indoors at home from the beginning of March. Then it can receive sufficient sunlight and does not grow asparagus.
This is what you need
If the time is right, all that is needed is a suitable container for cultivation, such as a pot or a seed tray or alternatively a prepared bed. Ideally, choose seeds from a variety that has proven itself. And don't forget: suitable soil. Chervil loves one:
- nutrient-rich,
- humoses and
- well-drained substrate.
Grab the seeds and let’s get started
Attention: Chervil seeds do not germinate for long. They should not be older than one year. And here we go:
- Sprinkle seeds on the soil (do not cover with soil! – light germinator)
- when planting in rows in the bed: distance of 15 cm
- Water the seeds and keep them moist over the following days
- ideal germination temperature: 18 to 20 °C
- Germination time: 15 to 20 days
After sowing
Once the seeds have turned into small plants, they can be planted out. The optimal location for chervil is in a partially shaded location. The soil there should be kept fresh to moist.
If you want to harvest chervil throughout the gardening season, grow it regularly. Normally it is sufficient to sow new seeds every 2 weeks.
Tips & Tricks
Chervil is a so-called site-faithful plant. This means that it does not like being moved (due to its fine root system). Direct sowing is therefore recommended.
