Sowing lovage in a pot
If you don't want to buy early lovage, grow it from seed. Sowing lovage is easy and can be done at home all year round.
Proceed as follows:
- choose a pot with a minimum capacity of 2 liters
- fill with herb or vegetable soil
- cover the seeds lightly with soil
- water well and keep moist afterwards
- after 15 to 20 days the cotyledons become visible
Which location is suitable?
You can place the lovage in the pot at home, for example, on the window sill in the living room, in a bright glazed staircase, on the kitchen window, on the balcony or on the terrace. The place should be flooded with sunlight.
When growing, a warm living room is recommended to speed up the germination process. Later the location should be bright and warm. Southeast and southwest locations on the balcony or terrace are ideal. If lovage is placed on the balcony facing south, greater attention must be paid to the soil's moisture environment.
This substrate is best
Herb or vegetable soil is suitable. Potting soil is not recommended due to its high chemical fertilizer content. The substances that may be harmful to you pass into the plant. Basically, the substrate should have the following properties:
- nutrient-rich
- humos
- permeable
- loamy
- calcareous
- pH value between 6 and 7
What care does the maggi herb need in the pot?
- water regularly (even in winter on frost-free days)
- remove wilted, brown leaves and stems
- Prevent flowering through regular cutting and avoiding dryness
- Fertilizer application every 4 weeks between April and August
- Wintering: outdoors and not in a warm location such as the living room
Tips & Tricks
Attention: If you have a pre-grown plant e.g. B. Buy from the hardware store or supermarket, slowly get the plant used to direct sunlight. Otherwise there is a risk that the leaves will burn due to the unusual sun and the plant will die.
