Rosemary is a very capricious plant that sometimes you can't do anything to please. Some rosemary plants f alter in seemingly optimal locations and then, when transplanted, literally bloom in seemingly less perfect locations. But if your rosemary looks dried out, you should get to the root cause as soon as possible.

How to save dried rosemary?

If a rosemary appears dried out, root rot is usually the cause. To save the plant, remove the diseased roots, dip the he althy roots in a rooting hormone and plant them in a new location or in fresh substrate. Also cut back diseased plant parts.

Root rot is usually behind it

It sounds paradoxical, but it is actually true: rosemary dries out because it has been exposed to too much moisture and humidity. In particular, waterlogging, too frequent watering or soil that is too heavy lead to the roots rotting and ultimately no longer being able to supply the above-ground parts of the plant with sufficient water and nutrients. Furthermore, the rotting roots are often attacked by microorganisms living in the soil, usually fungi. So if your rosemary looks dry even though you water it regularly and the soil doesn't appear dry, you should dig it up and take a closer look at the roots.

Saving dry rosemary

With a little luck - and quick action - a rosemary that has dried up due to root rot can still be saved. The rescue operation goes like this:

  • Dig up planted rosemary using a spading fork.
  • Potted rosemary is simply taken out of the pot.
  • Carefully remove the soil from the roots, for example in a shower.
  • Now examine the roots for any signs of rot.
  • Sick roots are cut off with a sharp and clean knife and discarded.
  • Be generous when pruning.
  • Dip the roots in a rooting hormone (€9.00 at Amazon) - this also prevents fungi from growing.
  • Now plant the rosemary in another location.
  • Place rosemary in a new pot with fresh substrate.

Either before transplanting or afterwards, you should cut the plant back heavily. All dried, diseased or wilted looking plant parts are removed. If possible, do not cut into old wood because it is difficult for the rosemary to sprout again. Water regularly, but only a little.

Tips & Tricks

A rosemary plant that leaves its needles hanging usually has a different kind of water problem. It is usually thirsty and needs more water. You should pay attention to this sign, especially in very hot summers or winter.
