If you have planted lady's mantle herb in your own garden, you can harvest it yourself. The best time to harvest the herb is during flowering between May and September. You can then use it fresh, for example in smoothies or salads.

Since the harvest quantities are usually high and the entire herb cannot be used or consumed immediately, it is advisable to dry it and use it later, for example to make tea. A heaped teaspoon of the dried herb is enough for one cup. Lady's mantle tastes extremely pleasant as a tea.

Ladies mantle as a tincture

To make a lady's mantle tincture you need a 40% vol. alcohol such as Doppelkorn, fresh or dried plant parts, a sealable container and a sieve or coffee filter. How to proceed:

  • Pour alcohol over the herb in the container
  • Close the vessel
  • Let stand in a warm place for 2 to 6 weeks
  • Filter tincture through sieve or coffee filter

You can store the finished tincture for several years. The alcohol preserves it well. To use: Take 3 to 6 drops 2 to 3 times a day. It is best to increase the dosage gradually.

Lady's mantle can be used externally as a poultice. You have two variants to choose from. Either you soak a cotton cloth (or other cloth such as cheesecloth) in a lady's mantle tea infusion and you make a paste from mashed lady's mantle herb. You can use the poultice, for example, for abscesses, dry skin and acne. Leave it on the skin for at least 30 minutes.

Can lady's mantle be overdosed and what is the right dose?

You should not take more than 5 to 10 g per day. Lady's mantle contains so-called tannins, which in overdose have a harmful effect on the liver. If you want to use the plant for medicinal purposes, it is advisable not to plant too many specimens. Harvest yields are usually high and what do you want in the end with cupboards full of dried herbs?

Attention: Pregnant women up to the 8th month should not use lady's mantle. It can trigger premature labor and thus a miscarriage. Only when the fetus is fully formed around the 36th week can/should women's herb be taken regularly.

Tips & Tricks

Lady's Mantle can also be eaten straight from the plant. But very few people like the bitter taste. Both the leaves and the flowers are edible.
