The name gentian stands for gentian schnapps, a bitter alcoholic drink, especially in the Alpine region. But gentian doesn't just play a role in the production of schnapps. The roots of yellow gentian are also used as a herbal remedy for all kinds of ailments.

Gentian root, especially yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea), is used as a remedy for digestive problems. Due to its high bitter content, it is administered as a tea, decoction, tincture, liqueur or schnapps. Caution is advised if you have high blood pressure or an irritable stomach.
